A breathtaking weekend of tense cricket finished the season with 3 of our 4 Junior teams winning their respective Grand Final matches.

The u12B team (pictured below, with coach David Capps) just fell short against Brighton Union unfortunately – but they have had a superb season, along with all of our 31 participating junior teams throughout all of the HCC age groups. They took the match down to the last few overs, falling only 33 runs short and played their best cricket when it mattered, as no other team had got close to beating Brighton Union this year. The whole team contributed, with special mentions to Rafael Papageorgiou for his captaincy, Rose Power for a strong 22 to open the innings and Henry Stott for smashing an unbeaten 30 to give us a chance. All the u12B team were standouts all year for their sportsmanship and genuine support for each other – HCC has some awesome young cricketers coming through the ranks!

The u14Bs were the first of our winning teams to close out their game and ultimately romped home, with Hugh Graydon and Jack Keogh taking 7 wickets between them both. The week prior Jack had also starred with the bat scoring 51 runs, very ably supported by Billy Bannister who made 33 runs from 42 balls. A fantastic win and congrats to all involved through the season!

Meanwhile over at Widdop Crescent Reserve a much tighter match was playing out for our u16Cs, with a very resilient Brighton team gradually chipping away at the 184 total set the week prior. Skipper Mikey Manku and Liam Saunders had both batted extremely well previously, and Mikey’s on-pitch smarts and Liam’s fielding efforts as keeper were to prove critical in the second day. Liam took 2 edges and 3 run-outs, but it was Wesley Dray that ultimately stood up with the ball when required. Wes took an astonishing 5 wickets from his 7 overs, for only 17 runs to leave Brighton all out in the final over only 6 runs behind. A superb match, which topped off a superb unbeaten season for coach Rahul and the boys!

Our last of the Grand Final games was played on a bright sunny Sunday morning up at Boss James, with plenty of dew on the ground. Our u17s and supporters arrived hopeful, but very aware that a large task faced the HCC team as they tried to defend only 96 made the week prior (Ollie Wilson made 30 runs from 34 balls) and MAJCC had already had time to put on 33 runs with the loss of only 1 wicket. What unfolded was to be the most dramatic and tense of all our 4 grand final games. Emmett Baker, Flynn Seator-Morris and Caelan Menahem gradually dug into the MAJCC top order taking 5 wickets between them. However it was the efforts of Lachlan Curtis that causes the real damage, decimating the MAJCC tail with 4 wickets from his 8.5 overs, for only 13 runs. An amazing effort in the field on a beautiful morning in Hampton that will live long in the memory for all of the players, coaches and spectators that were there.
